    5 Steps

How to Get Bank Fees Refunded

Strategies for getting overdraft fees, NSF fees, and monthly maintenance fees reversed. Banks refund these more than you think.

    Steps

    1

    Call your bank

Call the number on the back of your debit card. Be polite but firm. Say: 'I'd like to request a courtesy refund of the overdraft fee charged on [date].' Banks refund 1-2 per year on request.

    2

    Cite your account history

If you're a long-term customer with generally positive history, mention this. Banks value retention more than a $35 fee.

    3

Ask for a supervisor if denied

Front-line agents have limited authority. Supervisors can approve larger refunds and policy exceptions.

    4

    Opt out of overdraft protection

Under Reg E, you can opt out of overdraft for debit card and ATM transactions. This prevents future fees — your card will simply be declined instead.

    5

File CFPB complaint if pattern exists

If you've been hit with multiple fees in a short period, or fees were charged in a deceptive order, file a CFPB complaint. The CFPB has fined major banks billions for junk fees.

    Expert Tips

Bank of America settled $225M with CFPB over junk fees — cite this
Wells Fargo paid $3.7B in CFPB fines — mention this in your complaint
Most banks have a fee waiver limit (1-2 per year) — just ask
Switch to a no-fee account if overdrafts are recurring
